Big City Greens - A Short Overview

Premiering on Disney Channel in November of 2018, Big City Greens is a very interesting type of show. It is not some silly happy go lucky show with no real meaning or substance. While it does have some slapstick humor, it does tackle a few real life instances and portrays a different type of family.

The Green family originated on a large family farm. Once the farm goes under, Bill Green hauls his family to his mother’s, Alice’s, house. This house, too, was once a farm property. Overtime, the “Big City” started growing around it. This left Alice with just her home, a shed, and a decently sized yard.

At first, the family only consists of Bill, his mother Alice, and his two children Tilly and Cricket. Bill is the ideal single father, doing his best for his children and treating them with respect. He rarely talks down to them. Alice is quite the force to be recon with. This strong headed maternal figure is quite stubborn but always has a soft spot for her son and grandchildren. Tilly is this creatively, quirky spaced out little girl. Cricket is the youngest. He never wears shoes but knows how to walk his way into wacky circumstances.

What happened to the mother? Well, at the beginning, it was mentioned she was incarcerated. Cricket said it once in a matter of fact, not ashamed. Because, that was his mom. He knew how much she cared for him and his family. When she finally zooms in on her motorcycle, the children rejoice, Bill is hesitant to see her, and Alice is far from happy. She proves herself to be the loving mother she truly is. The only reason for Bill’s hesitation is because he wasn’t sure how responsible she was. Alice is mad because she left her son broken hearted and her grand babies without a mother.

Long story short, they portray a “struggling” family happily strolling through life. The silly antics are all from a good place. Even when things go out of hand, they always stick together as a family. They learn and grow together.
