Andi Mack - A Short Overview

Andi Mack is a 3 season, main channel, Disney Show show based on the life of newly 13 year old Andi Mack. On her birthday she discovers a pretty big family secret. Her sister, Bex, is actually her mother. That’s right, there’s talk of teen pregnancy on Disney. But it is so much more than that. It follows a half Chinese, female dominated family and their diverse group of friends. There are so many complexities that unfold throughout the show.

There’s Buffy, who has a mother in the military, who dealt with racial stereotypes. Then there is Jonah, who discovers and then subsequently suffers from an anxiety disorder. And Cyrus, who is Disney Channel’s first ever “outted” member of the LGBTQ+ community. They also touch on both Chinese and Jewish traditions, in a way that makes sense. It’s not a history lesson, it’s watching life unfold.

Unfortunately, it is worth noting that when you may go to stream it...and some episodes are missing. That’s because, the person who plays Andi’s grandfather, committed some federal crimes and Disney, rightfully, distanced him from the show. This would remove any episodes with him, understandably, and leave us with gaps in the story line. The full show can be purchased or rented via Apple Store or Amazon Prime Video. And some episodes of the show do, in fact, remain on Disney+ which is included in the general membership.
